Amazon Alexa Lost Her Voice Conversation

Introduction I chose to monitor the conversation surrounding the new Amazon commercial. I monitored a Facebook post of the video, My sample size on Facebook was 30 comments.  Results I separated these 30 comments into positive and negative categories. The pie chart below shows the percentage of positive vs negative comments.  Out of 30 comments, 22 were positive and 8 were negative.

Although the Super Bowl does not air until Sunday, February 4th, Amazon leaked their Super Bowl commercial early. According to AdNews, Super Bowl commercials are a "cultural phenomenon." People look forward to these commercials almost as much as they look forward to the game. It was not surprising when the negative comments on the video were mostly over the commercial being leaked before the big game. Companies should wait until the big game to air their big game commercials. Especially when, according to Syracuse.com, a 30 second advertisement during the Super Bowl costs $5 Million just to air. Essentially if people are going to see the commercial before the game, I don't see the point in paying $5 Million. 


Other negative comments were questioning how this commercial actually advertised the product. Some people thought this commercial did a better job at advertising the actors. 

The Good On the other hand, an overwhelming majority of 73% loved the video and either did not mind it being released early or did not comment on that issue. Facebook comments raved about the actor decisions and the overall commercial. People were commenting about their favorite actors used, their favorite quotes, and tagging other friends for them to see as well. 




Also, some people liked that the commercial was released early because they are not watching the Super Bowl. 

Recommendation There is no doubt about the success of this commercial. An overwhelming majority liked the video over those who did not. However, I recommend waiting for the Super Bowl to air Super Bowl commercials. Super Bowl ads are expensive and waiting to air them at the Super Bowl makes them more anticipated than leaking them early. When you leak them early, people aren't as excited to see the commercial during the game because they already saw it. It may be seen as a waste of money. Social media which is relatively cheaper already took care of what that 30 second ad spot would do Sunday. Social media spread the video around to millions of people and got people talking about Amazon Alexa. Overall the commercial was a success.
